The Economic Times quoted an official as saying in its report that about 81.35 crore people are benefiting under the National Food Security Act. This is about two-thirds of the country's population. At present, about 800 million people receive 5 kg of free foodgrains every month under the Prime Minister's Poor Welfare Food Scheme (PMGKAY). The government can expand these plans. The plan was launched in March 2020 to combat the Corona virus epidemic.
"Under NFSA, we supply 42 million tonnes of foodgrains at subsidized rates," the official said. Wheat is distributed at Rs 2 per kg and rice at Rs 3 per kg.
