Chandrayaan Lander Found On Moon, Trying To Establish Contact: ISRO Chief Isro locates Chandrayaan-2 lander on Moon, but yet to make contact

India had expected to make space history with the Rs 1,000-crore Chandrayaan 2 mission. A successful soft landing on the moon would have made the country only the fourth - after the United States, Russia and China - to achieve the feat

Chandrayaan 2 lunar lander Vikram has been located on the moon's surface and the ground station is working to establish contact, ISRO chief K Sivan told news agency ANI today. ISRO lost contact with Vikram on Saturday morning while the lander was attempting a historic soft landing near the south pole of the moon.

India had expected to make space history with the Rs 1,000-crore Chandrayaan 2 mission. A successful soft landing on the moon's surface would have made the country only the fourth - after the United States, Russia and China - to achieve the feat. It would also have made India the first country to complete a soft landing near the South Pole on its first attempt.

According to sources, communication with the lander has not yet been established.

The lander was located with the help of the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter, which remains safe and is revolving around the Moon. The orbiter managed to shoot a thermal image of the Vikram lander.

In an exclusive interview to India Today TV, Isro chief K Sivan said that the agency has managed to locate the lander using the orbiter and has attained a thermal image of it.

Isro has been able to identify the lander Vikram, but the condition of the lander is yet to be ascertained.
